High school volleyball: Allyson Wines resigns at Wadsworth with regular season looming

WADSWORTH — In a stunning development on the eve of the regular season, Wadsworth volleyball coach Allyson Wines has resigned after a historic three years that featured the Grizzlies' only state tournament appearance.Wines informed the school of her decision Friday, shortly after a meeting at the high school with superintendent Andrew Hill, principal Vincent Suber and athletic director Tim Campbell.She compiled a 68-10 record with a Medina County-record .872 winning percentage, three Suburban League National Conference championships, three regional berths and a trip to the 2024 Division II state semifinals."I will continue to support the girls from afar because I love them as my own," said Wines, whose peers voted her the 2025 district coach of the year in D-II. "Was this an easy decision? No, but I know what I bring to the table."The Akron resident and Nova Juniors national club coach spent seven total seasons at Wadsworth, taking over the program in 2023. She initially served as the junior varsity coach and varsity assistant under both Jeff Walck and Mallory Adams.The Grizzlies are coming off a 24-2 campaign, including 14-0 in conference play, that saw them finish fourth in the state coaches poll. They matched the second-most wins in a season in county history for the second year in a row.Wadsworth also was perfect in SL matches in 2024, when it went 24-3 overall and captured the Tallmadge District and Hudson Regional crowns on its way to the state semifinals. Wines' .750 tournament winning percentage over 12 matches ranks first locally in the rally-scoring era.Current Robert Morris outside hitter Lauren Decker and Ohio University setter Rowan Kelly were the driving forces behind the epic postseason journeys, along with Lily McComas and Quinn Macko. Kelly was a 2025 All-Ohio first-team honoree, while three-time Gazette MVP Decker was chosen for the second team."I will go watch Rowan play and go watch Lauren play this fall," Wines said. "I've got a lot of free time coming up."Though the OHSAA season began Monday, the Grizzlies aren't scheduled for their first match until Aug. 25 against Solon.
