Regional track and field: Avon girls three-peat with decisive victory

For the third year in a row the Avon girls ruled the regional track and field competition.This time, they dominated at the North Royalton Division I, Super Regional 2 on Saturday, capturing the title in decisive fashion.The Avon girls amassed 133 points, outdistancing second-place Solon (103). They met May 1 at Avon's Jim Reynolds Invitational, and Avon won that one as well, 155-117.The victory Saturday required front-line strength and depth. Avon amassed seven firsts, four seconds and a third. Solon countered with three firsts, four seconds and four thirds.The Eagles were led by sophomore Ally Brediger, senior Kaitlyn Reese and junior Paige Justice.Brediger swept the 100 (11.84 seconds), 400 (55.74) and 200 meters (24.11).Her margins of victory in the 100 and 200 were razor-thin. Brediger edged Hoover junior Savannah Tindell in the 100 11.838 to 11.839. She just beat Valley Forge senior Navaeh Hall 24.11 to 24.12 in the 200. Brediger is believed to be the first Lorain County Division I girl to sweep the regional sprints.Brediger also anchored the winning 800 relay that included Jayla Antrum, Molley Kennedy and Justice for a county-record 1:39.59, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:40.60 set by the same four May 15 at the Southwestern Conference meet."I feel like as a team we all did very well focusing on our own events, which helped us be able to come together with the team win," said Brediger. "I have definitely worked hard enough to be able to do all three (events). It's definitely a harder lineup, especially at the state meet, but I'm just trusting the work I have put in and I'm going to execute each race my best."Reese added to her wins Thursday in the 3,200 and as a member of the 3,200 relay with second-place finishes in the 1,600 (4:57.74) and 800 (2:13.44).Justice added seconds in the 100 hurdles (14.36) and 300 hurdles (44.17) to sandwich her participation in the winning 800 relay. She added a fourth qualifying spot as a member of the fifth-place 1,600 relay (4:06.10) that included Antrum, Jessica Pendleton and Madison Gettings.Junior Kenzie Kiesel gave the Avon girls a boost in the field events with a win in discus (125-11). She finished ninth (113-11) at regionals last year."I am tremendously grateful to be able to coach such an amazing group of young women," Avon girls coach Sam Ulery said. "They bought into the plan we set up for this meet and understood the physical and mental toughness that today was going to bring. This was an incredibly challenging meet with some absolutely amazing teams and athletes. Our girls stepped up to that challenge and gave everything they had. For that I am very proud because as a coach that is all you can ask."We had a few disappointments along the way, but overall I am elated about advancing so many to the state meet. I am exceptionally proud of Kaitlyn, Ally, Paige and Jayla, all of whom competed in four events this meet. Kenzie also was regional champion in discus and that was a great lift for us. I just appreciate all the effort the girls and coaches put in all season.
