High school track: Kyle Vonderau, Connor Rhein lead Black River at Olin Invitational

ORANGE TWP. — Kyle Vonderau and Connor Rhein were burning the midnight oil Friday night.The duo powered the Black River boys track and field team to fourth place at the 11-team Josh Olin Night Invitational hosted by Mapleton, picking up individual victories.Vonderau won three events, taking the 300-meter hurdles in 42.0 seconds and helping Black River win the meet-christening 4x800 relay (8:34.8) as well as the 4x4 (3:33) to end it."I think we're performing a lot better than we did last year," Vonderau said. "Me and Noah (Orgel), especially, have dropped our times quite a bit. It's been a good season so far."Orgel was on both winning relays, Rhein was on the 4x8 with Lucas Olive and the 4x4 was rounded out by Austin Pamer and Olive.In addition to the 4x8, Rhein blew past the competition on a cold, windy and sometimes rainy night in the 3,200 (9:48.4).Rhein was a state qualifier in the 3,200 last season and feels even more prepared as a junior to build on that success."I'm more fit," Rhein said. "I haven't P.R.'ed yet, but I've ran faster than I did last year at this time. I'm looking forward to getting into some more fast races."The Black River girls were sixth out of 11 teams and paced by the 4x1 runner-up finish of Delaney Denger, Morgan Kubitz, Maddie Orgel and Hailee Moskal (53.9).Moskal added a third in the 200 (28.8) and Denger was third in the long jump (14 feet, 1.5 inches). Grace Racut was third in the 400 (1:05.3).The Pirates' final top-three finish came from the 4x8 of Hailey Lambdin, Maddie Groesser, Ella McCann and Ruby Johnston. The quartet clocked 11:27.6 to start the day.For the boys' 4x8, Noah Orgel handed the baton to Rhein with a slight lead on the pack. Rhein extended and Olive and Vonderau refused to give up any ground.Black River hopes to see that relay go far into the postseason."We're feeling pretty good," Rhein said. "This one was definitely a confidence-booster because we were running alone for most of the race and to tie our best time is good."It shows we can go way faster once we're racing against more people and have people with us the whole race."Rhein's 3,200 was much of the same, as the Black River junior raced his time more than the competitors by the second of eight laps.Vonderau was equally impressive with his 300 hurdles win, taking off fast, getting out in front early and staying there."I feel like we can push a lot harder," Vonderau said. " If we can get our times down just a little bit more, we'll be able to break the school record we've been chasing for so long (8:21 in the 4x8) and win some more meets."The 4x4 win was an excellent way to close the meet that went on well past 11 p.m.The boys also got runner-up finishes from Noah Orgel in the 800 (2:02.3) and Pamer in the long jump (18-0).
