Track and Field: Avon boys and girls continue winning ways at LCAAA meet

This story has been edited to correct times in the boys' 400 and girls' 800.HENRIETTA TWP. — Avon continued its dominance Friday at the 81st Lorain County Athletic Administrators Association Track and Field Invitational at Firelands High School.The Avon boys won the LCAAA classic for the sixth year in a row and a record 24th time. The Avon girls won for the fifth straight year and a record 25th time.The Avon boys won six events, taking three on the track and three in field events. They had three seconds and three thirds, outdistancing second-place Firelands 129-96.The Avon girls won eight events — all on the track — plus had six seconds and a third. The Avon girls ran away from runner-up Firelands 163.5 to 66.Avon senior Jackson Hughes won the high jump (6 feet, 6 inches) and long jump (22-5.5). He finished sixth in high jump and ninth in long jump at the 2025 state meet."It went great," said Hughes. "I would have liked to maybe have jumped a little higher and maybe a little farther but I'm happy to score points for my team."After coming off a full indoor track season, you need a month to come back and rebuild everything after trying to peak for the indoor state meet. As a team we're just going nuts. Just checking out our live results I keep seeing PR after PR for us. I see a lot of points being scored by us."The Avon boys got a nice shot in the arm in pole vault, where senior Thomas Smith won with a meet- and school-record mark of 14-8. It broke the 2011 meet record of 14-6 held by Amherst's Matt Zvosec and the 2021 school record of 14-7 held by Hunter Maxey."I really worked on my form this week. It really helped me a lot," said Smith. "I cleared 13-0 and 13-6 on my first attempts, 14-0 on my second try and 14-8 on my first attempt."Avon senior Maximus Hauck won shot put with 57-2.5. He finished fourth in the same event last year with 48-0.25.Avon junior Michael Colburn won the 100 meters over teammate Jairel Fenton 10.96 to 10.97 despite competing in a slower heat as the No. 10 seed (11.46).Eagles junior Jared Keressi held off Keystone senior Eli McConoughey to win the 800 1:58.31 to 2:00.03. McConoughey earlier won the 1,600 (4:32.76).Keressi rebounded from a bizarre circumstance in the 3,200 relay, where Avon took second to Avon Lake 8:06.92 to 8:07.56. Keressi lost his left shoe with 350 meters of his second leg left but still split 1:58."We're just fortunate to have great coaching," said Keressi. "Second off, we all support each other. We're always there for each other any time anyone has a mental block."Sophomore Ally Brediger and junior Paige Justice were the catalysts for the Avon girls. Brediger defended her meet titles in the 100 (11.99) and 200 (24.69). She was second in the 400 (56.57).Brediger and Justice teamed with Jayla Antrum and Madison Gettings for a second in the 800 relay (1:42.72)."I think we're all doing very well, girls and boys," said Brediger, 2025 Division I state runner-up in the 100 and 200. "It's our first meet back from spring break that we're all together. There's definitely a lot of work that we have to do individually, but overall as a team I think that we're doing very well."Brediger's open 400 as well as the Avon girls 800 relay would have been meet records except that Oberlin was slightly better.Justice was on fire in her two open events. She set meet records in the 100-meter hurdles (14.69) and the 300-meter hurdles (44.18). Justice was second in both races at last year's LCAAA meet."I didn't realize until right now how close my 300 hurdle time was to my personal best (43.5)," said Justice. "It definitely makes me more excited to try and get my time down into the 42s and 41st when it gets close to state. I'm definitely happy with the 44 knowing that I can drop that by a lot. I just need to fix a couple things with my technique."Oberlin senior Olivia Hudson won the 400 meters in a meet-record 56.20, shattering her 2025 meet record of 57.47. Hudson earlier teamed with Alyssa Webb, Aubrey Abeyta and Cayman Noble to win the 800 relay in 1:41.49, breaking Oberlin's 2025 meet record of 1:42.90."The 800 relay went very well," said Hudson. "We didn't run it as fast early in the season last year. It was great to come here and break the meet record. It's just 0.2 of a second off the school record."You can't look around too much when racing the 400. You just have to go and run your race and hope that no one is too close behind you. Once I couldn't see anyone I just ran for my life hoping that no one would catch me."Seniors Colton Clough of Firelands and Ben Thompson of Amherst matched up in the 400, where Clough prevailed 49.07 to 49.85. Last year Thompson (49.45) and Clough (49.50) finished second and third behind Elyria Catholic's Connor Petrus (49.18)."I love racing with Ben," said Clough. "I ran this race against him last year and I know how he runs it. He likes to run kind of an even split. I came out and ran my race. It's nice to go 1-2 with one of my good friends.""I knew Colton was going to win within the first 100 meters," said Thompson. "That's just the way he runs the race. He just gets out super hard and just sails the rest of the way. I'm just more like going for the kick, which is what I tried to do this time but I couldn't catch up to him."Clough came back to win the 200 over teammate Andrew Pawlak 22.19 to 22.33. Thompson earlier teamed with juniors Carter Boone, Julius Donald and Gaige Patton to win the 800 relay in a meet-record 1:27.40.Firelands sophomore Brett Beury won discus with a school-record throw of 176-11, breaking his school mark of 170-11 set April 3 at the Howe invite. He missed the 2014 meet record of 177-0 held by Avon Lake's Max Seipel by an inch.The meet abruptly ended in an unusual circumstance.A car crash on Vermilion Road at around 9:45 p.m. just south of the high school took out a pole and knocked the power out at the stadium just as the boys 3,200-meter run was finishing.
