Girls wrestling: Marisa McCartin wins on points in final match before home crowd

BRUNSWICK — Senior Marisa McCartin wrote a storybook ending to the Brunswick Girls Wrestling Invitational.Wrestling in the final championship match of Saturday evening, McCartin edged Brecksville's Anna Madi, a three-time state placer, 4-3 in the 130-pound final.The win showed how far McCartin has come after Madi pinned McCartin in the 125 seventh-place match at last season's state tournament. Madi was the state runner-up at 120 and 125 as a freshman and sophomore."I'm glad I got that rematch, my state rematch," McCartin said. "I came out with a dub. It wasn't pretty, but she's a good wrestler. I train with her all summer, so I knew her style and that helped me plan around it."McCartin got an escape and takedown in the second period to make the win sweeter. Earlier in the day, she recorded a technical fall, pin and decision in one of the deepest weight classes of the tournament."It felt great (to win at home)," McCartin said. "I loved having the guys (wrestlers) there supporting me. They're super supportive of me and push me in the room. I'll drill with them all the time."McCartin's efforts led the Blue Devils (50.5) to 16th out of 48 schools. Brunswick also saw Ella Sabo (5th, 145) and Sarah King (6th, 125) place.Walsh Jesuit (191.5) edged Claymont (182.5) for top team billing.Highland 140-pound freshman Kelsey Denholm joined McCartin in earning titles for Medina County, pinning Northwest's Callie Curnutte in 1:02 to earn her first tournament win.The pin was Denholm's third in as many matches."It feels really good," she said. "That's my first high school win, and I'm very happy about that. I had a lot of fun with my teammates. I just love coming out here with my teammates."Picking up her first tournament win before the Hornets head to the Avon Lake Sectional gives Denholm, a two-time Ohio Athletic Committee state placer in middle school, plenty of confidence and momentum."I'm really excited for postseason," Denholm said. "I've been working really hard for it. I hope I can get myself to state this year."Denholm was joined by Lexi Timura as a placer for the Hornets (68), who were 12th. Timura took fifth at 170, going 4-2.Cloverleaf's Amelia Ryncarz nearly made it 3-for-3 for countians in the finals, but a little bit of misfortune struck midway through the third period of her 145 final.Ryncarz, who pinned her first two opponents, was dominating Columbia's Gabby Grace 11-3 before Grace caught her for a pin with 58 seconds left.Ryncarz led the Colts (105) to earn seventh, the best score in the county.
